My team manager from Reef emailed me couple months ago to announce me that they are going to send me to the Mentawai, with two girl friends to shoot their next collection..
Here some inside photos and stories about this lifetime experience..
After a long journey, we spent one night in Padang to take the ferry the next morning, we were all super excited to be reunited and happy to have all our luggages with us to start this adventure. Our first sunrise was during this three hours drive, next stop : the middle of nowhere..
And here we are, in P A R A D I S E , or more exactly at the Alaia Resort, hosting by the kindest people, David and Natsuko and their puppies. The room view was literally the beach and we could see at night the lights of the little village that lives right in front of Gniagnia island. We get on the resort around lunch time and get some time to relax, unpacked and prepare our game plan for the next weeks. David explained us the swell direction was perfect to get barrels and that the waves will be kinda solid tomorrow..
I was so excited to go surfing that this first night I woke up 4 times and couldn't fall back asleep at 3am.. Two hours later, I was drinking my cup of coffee and eating a fruit bowl as fast as possible and 20 minutes later, we were in the boat, my shortboard and longboard too.
We surfed for hours, uncrowded waves, shortboarding and barrels in the morning, logging for the sunsets. 8 hours of surfing per day..
Everyday we found different waves, mostly lefts, I was getting obsessed with barrels. I don't do shortboards that often but since I've been to this place, I'm starting enjoying riding this kind of board and was impatient for the big swell...
The life was so easy, our morning routine was a cup of coffee, some delicious banana pancakes and we were off our island for the day, finding the perfect white sand bar in the middle of nowhere or cute little islands to explore in between sessions.. Every photos we were taken didn't need any filters.
" You are what you eat " definitely works on a surf trip like that. The alaia resort offered us the best local and healthy food. Fruits, fish, vegetables and chicken. Only after one week, I could feel and see that my body was getting toned.
We spent our days in the speed boat, the boards at the front, the food and our bag on the inside and we were gone for the day. Even if it was pooring rains, the landscape was still dreamy and we had so much fun.
This is the thing I love the most about the tropical place, you can surf no matter what is the weather..
Here my favorite longboard shot, taken at Four Bobs, in between two crazy storms. The sun was so strong when the rain stopped for couple minutes before it started raining again. Two or three boats were hanging in the pass, and our boat was the only one who stayed safe between the two spots and we have stay by ourself for the rest of the afternoon.
Bikinis, the little long left next to my favorite was pumping, the vibe and the sunset was magical, everyone were smiling, enjoying life with our same love for the ocean. x
